Numerous studies conducted by the U.S. Department of Transportation have shown that college-aged students are at a higher risk for being in an auto accident. So, having the auto insurance to protect your child is vital, but where do you start?

You can keep them on your insurance if they are already on there. They can also take out their own auto insurance as a young adult to learn some responsibility. It really is a choice dependent on your family’s preferences, so you may need to sit down and have a talk.

If they are going to take out an auto insurance policy of their own, here are a few things they need to keep in mind:

  • It will be expensive. Insurers know the statistics and demographics for this age group and aren’t bashful about charging more
  • Good grades can help lower rates, so make sure your child is doing their best in class
  • Shop around. Auto insurance is one of those things in life where you definitely want multiple options to choose from, so settling on the first quote they get won’t help them very much. Different companies have various criteria, so rates can differ.

In addition to making sure your child is insured, you should also talk with them about what to do in the event of an accident, especially if they’ve never been in one before. This includes taking down the other driver’s information, asking witnesses for their information and what questions to ask.

The biggest thing is that you are sending them off to school prepared. Southern Risk Services  hopes they don’t ever need to use their insurance, but we want to help in any way we can. You can get in touch with us for any assistance you need for auto, home, health or other insurance needs.
